Engine Break-In Procedure

by Hib Halverson

QUESTION:
I just had the 327/350hp engine rebuilt for my '66 coupe. Most of the internal components are new. The engine has not been started yet. What are the theories on proper break-in procedure and type of oil to use?

ANSWER:
New fill should be a 10W-30 petroleum based oil that meets at least API SG specs.

Pressurize the oiling system by removing the distributor and replacing it was a prelube tool driven by a drill motor. Prelube the system for 30-60 seconds.

Reinstall the distributor and set it for 20 deg advance to ensure an immediate start. Set the carb for fast idle.

Start the engine and, if the camshaft is new, run at 2000 rpm. Immediately, reset total advance to the proper spec. then run the engine for 20 minutes. This may cause overheating with some engines so take appropriate measures to ensure airflow through the radiator and make sure no air bubbles develop in the cooling system after the first fire-up. Upon thermostat opening verify that coolant level is correct. After 20 min. take the engine off fast idle and shut the motor off. Readjust the valves. If any special camshaft prelube was used, change the oil filter.

You are now ready to drive the car. Run it 250-500 miles and change the oil filter. If you are going to switch to synthetic oil, now is the time to do that. If you are going to continue to run petro-based oil, change the filter again at 3000-4500 miles then change the oil and filter at 6000-7500 miles. Thereafter, change the oil every 6000-7500 miles and do the filter twice as often.

Drive the engine normally from the first start-up except, do not run the engine above 4500 rpm for the first 500 miles. Additionally, before you run it hard the first time, check the valve adjustment, the timing and make sure the carburetor is properly calibrated.
